THE ULTIMATE
Some benefits to arguing about gun control is that it is both a relevant and well-known issue. Many political campaigns, for example, campaign on this issue, causing some political prospects to soar while others crash and burn. Although most Americans are unaware of the statistical relationship between violent crimes and gun control, they understand the subject well-enough to be able to accept an argument and allow that argument to influence their opinion. Some aspects of this topic will be easy to research, such finding reliable statistics showing the relationship of gun control to gun violence. Others may prove more difficult, such as finding a solution to gun violence that protects Americans’ 2nd amendment rights while also preventing gun crime from happening. Gun control is a better topic than others as the fundamentals of the argument are widely known among the American population. Another reason is that the topic of gun control grants the arguement the ability to manipulate some Americans’ sense of patriotism to the Constitution and fear of tyranny or to appeal to other Americans’ fear of gun violence.
My second research topic is on police brutality and aims to determine the racial disparities in police brutality and to offer solutions for police brutality. Some benefits to this topic is that this is one of the largest and most influential political issues ever since George Floyd was murdered in May of 2020. Another benefit is that I will have the opportunity to offer my own unique ethos, as an African American, to the argument. This topic will be easy to research as the statistics on police brutality are now much more widely available and widely known due to the protests against police brutality in the summer of 2020. This topic is better than others because of how widespread knowledge of this issue is and because of how well the topic lends itself to appealing to fear and appealing to one’s lived experiences.
